The most prolific goal scorer and point producer in the school’s soccer history and a set of twins who blazed trails for women’s sports will be inducted into the Keuka College Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday, Sept. 19.

Alumni Loreto Barbone (2004), Joanne Lusink LeRoy (1967), and Susanne Lusink Yarnell (1967) will bring membership in the Hall of Fame to 14.

One of the highlights of Family Weekend, the ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Weed Physical Arts Center, home to the Hall of Fame. A reception will follow.

Loreto Barbone

Rochester native and Greece Athena High School graduate Barbone rewrote the men’s soccer record book at KeukaCollege. He is the Storm’s all-time leading scorer, compiling 140 points on the strength of a Keuka-best 58 goals and 24 assists, No. 2 in College annals.

He set the single season record for goals (18) and points (47) in 2003, leading the Storm to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) regular season and tournament titles for the third straight season. Barbone earned All-NEAC honors and was named MVP of the conference tournament in three straight seasons (2001-2003) and was named NEAC Player of the Year in 2001 and 2002.

In 2003, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America selected Barbone to the All-Northeast Region second team.

Before Barbone arrived on the Keuka campus in 2000, the Storm had posted three consecutive losing seasons. His Keuka teams posted four straight winning campaigns and a 45-25-3 record, including a school best 13 (13-4-0) wins in 2003.

Barbone, who earned a B.A. degree in marketing, resides in Rochester and is director of business development for eHealth Global Technologies in Pittsford.

Joanne Lusink LeRoy

Before Title IX and before Keuka established an intercollegiate sports program for women, LeRoy paved the way through her multi-sport participation and leadership.

She played basketball, tennis and, along with her twin sister, started the swim team. Keuka’s 100-yard freestyle relay team, which included the Lusink sisters, held the record at the old University of Rochester pool for many years. LeRoy was also a member of the Women’s Athletic Association (WAA) Board, organized a water carnival, participated in “play days” at area colleges and universities, and took part in intramurals.

LeRoy, who earned a B.A. degree in French from Keuka and a M.A. in French from Middlebury College, was a member of the foreign language faculty in the Greece, Pittsford, Penfield, and Wayne Central School Districts. She currently is a foreign language substitute teacher in the Pittsford district.

LeRoy has coached the Pittsford girl’s varsity golf team since 2000, compiling a 96-3-1 record and a state record 53 consecutive wins. She started the Monroe County League in 2000, was named Coach of the Year that season, and was selected All-Greater Rochester Coach of the Year for Golf in 2007 and 2008.

A talented golfer in her own right, the Canandaigua resident has won club championships at Webster and CenterPointe, and captained the Women’s Rochester District Golf Association (WRDGA) Captain’s Cup team.

Susanne Lusink Yarnall

Just as her twin sister, Yarnall was a mover and shaker in the years before intercollegiate sports for women became a reality.

A WAA officer and board member, she participated in intramurals, “play days,” the Point Neamo Water Ski Program, crew, and swimming. She also served as sports editor for the Keukonian, Keuka’s student newspaper.

Yarnall, who holds a B.S. from Keuka and M.A. from the University of Rochester, has devoted her career to teaching. She taught fourth grade in the Brighton Central School District for 30 years and is currently a substitute teacher in the Canandaigua Central School District. Earlier in her career, she served a two-year stint in the Peace Corps, teaching in Malawi.

The Canandaigua resident is recognized as one of the top golfers in the region, winning the club championship at CenterPointe numerous times from 1980 to 2006 and the senior club championship in 2007 and 2008. She has compiled second place finishes in the WRDGA Senior Championship and New York State Senior Championship while winning her age division in the latter. She and her sister won the National Twins Day Tournament in 2007.

She has devoted her time and talents to junior golf, serving as WRDGA Junior chairperson and volunteering for junior programs in the Rochester area and the LPGA junior clinics. She has also served as president, vice president, and secretary of the WRDGA.
