Winter teams will be busy after new year arrives
The 2008 portion of the 2008-09 winter sports season is history. Here's a recap and a look at what's on tap early in 2009.
Men’s Basketball
Record: 3-2
Review: The men’s hoops squad started the 2008-09 campaign with wins over SUNY Canton and
Stats: Leading the way all season has been senior guard Justin Stern, who is averaging 17.4 points a game. Stern has made 18 of his 38 3-point attempts (47 percent) while making at least two in each game and connecting on six against SUNY Canton. He has also gone 33-for-36 (92 percent) at the free throw line. Sophomore center Diamond Booker has also enjoyed a huge start, averaging 10.4 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks a game. Booker pulled down at least 15 rebounds in three straight games. Junior guard Alex Coleman is second on the team in scoring at 12.3 points a game while classmate Peter Durr is right behind him at 12.2 points a game.

Women’s Basketball
Record: 1-5
Review: The Storm opened the season with four losses before defeating Penn State-Harrisburg, 63-41 and the losing its final game of 2008 to SUNY Cobleskill.
Stats: Three-point specialist Jessica Fink has been leading the Storm’s offense. The sophomore guard is averaging 9.8 points a game and has made 15 of her 31 3-point attempts (48 percent). Fink netted five trifectas in two straight games. Junior guard Melissa Thurston has terrorized teams on the defensive side of the court with 29 steals in just six games (4.8 per game). Thurston is also averaging 8.8 points and 5.4 rebounds a game. Sophomore guard Brittany Schrock is also averaging 8.8 points a contest while netting nine 3-pointers. Sophomore point guard Courtney Lincoln is averaging 7.8 points and 5.4 rebounds a game while dishing off a team-high six assists a contest. Senior forward Angela Viggiani leads the team with seven rebounds a game.
Upcoming: The Storm will play an away game at
Synchronized Swimming
Review: The Storm had only one competition thus far and that was a 33.5-30 upset over the No. 3 Golden Griffins of Canisius College. The event was strictly a figures competition as no routines were performed.
Stats: Junior Shannon Crowder took third in the “A” figures while senior Jennifer Kaminska placed third in “B” figures. Rookie Megan Moorhouse placed first overall in “C” figures while junior Sarah Silverman took first in “D” figures.
